ZunaVision is a video technology that movie studios have had for years, brought to the average user by the computer science department at Stanford University. It lets you place images and videos within existing videos. Want to put a poster or an advertisement on a building in the background of your footage? ZunaVision’s got you covered. How about changing the painting in a picture frame? It can do that, too.

ZunaVision isn’t very hard to use. You can just select a surface, and it does a capable job of making your image look like it could plausibly be hanging there. It’s not just pasted haphazardly on top of your video. It’s cool enough that I’m already worried it won’t stay free for long. The last Stanford web toy, Vector Magic, turned into a pay service after a while. Zunavision looks like it could be worth selling, too, but maybe the creators can just turn a profit by sneaking ads into other videos.

Not everyone wants to let Windows handle downloading and installing updates. If you prefer the DIY approach, here are three ways to keep your system up to date without Windows helping out.

1. Windiz Updates provides an experience that’s as similar to the original as its name. The twist is that this service won’t work in Internet Explorer - you’ll need Firefox and the Windiz addon. It doesn’t collect any personal information, and IE doesn’t even need to be installed on your system to use it.

It’s an intelligent system and won’t download old updates that have been superceded by newer ones. Windiz also won’t install updates that have potential security issues. New updates with It can even provide updates for Microsoft’s golden oldies like 95 and NT.

2. Windows Updates Downloader is a bit more cumbersome, but it does the job. After installing the app, you’ll need to download the appropriate .ulz files from this page to access the updates. The updater can handle Windows 2000 Pro, Server 2003, XP, Vista (both 32 and 64 bit), and even Office 2003 and Exchange Server.

Select the updates you want and the downloader goes to work, dropping the individual KB files into your specified folder - the path and automatic naming options can be customized. Once they’re downloaded, double click each update you want to install.

One important note: although the items are marked with checkboxes, you have to double-click them to check and uncheck an update. Don’t click once and mutter “WTF” like I did at first.

3. CT Update uses WGET to handle everything from 2000 to server 2008 - regardless of the language of your Windows install - and then creates a CD or DVD images of your updates. Pop the disc in your target machine (or mount the iso) and run updateinstaller.exe and let it run. It creates a temporary account with the necessary rights to install the updates and reboot without user interaction, then removes the account when it’s finished.

4. 360Safe is a chinese software that help you protect from malware ans spyware. It also can check the safety of your computer. It has been about 2 years time since Windows Vista officially launched to end user, there are still a lot of people sticking back to Windows XP, myself included. But there aren’t enough attractive features to tempt me to switch to Vista, one that i do like is the Vista Sidebar. Deviantart user joshoon has posted a package that allows you to install the real Vista sidebar on your Windows XP computer.

Installing the sidebar consists of installing three packages: Alky for Applications, Windows Sidebar Installer, and Gadget Extractor. Alky for Applications is where the magic happens allowing Vista-specific software to run under XP. An interesting side-effect of installing the Windows Sidebar Installer is that the Vista-specific fonts are added to your XP installation.

Because this is an XP-compatible version of the actual Vista sidebar rather than a copy, all of the widgets that you could install in Vista will work on XP.

The secunia is a vulnerability scanner for your personal computer. The overview provides an overall score (given as a percentage) as well as basic information about your programs, displaying the total number that are patched, insecure, and no longer supported (EOL). There’s also a simple pie chart for visual reference.

Apart from providing an exhaustive listing of potential threats, Secunia does an excellent job of linking to the downloads needed to correct them. You’ll have to download and install each file individually, but at least they’re all accessible from a single page.

As a computer technician, I have to fight with on customer computers is damaged antivirus and internet security program installs. Much of the time there’s no simple way to get rid of them once something has gone wrong, and they can cause all kinds of headaches.

Fortunately, some of the companies are good enough to provide uninstall tools to help us out.

McAfee: MCPR
While I was putting this post together, their web site starter throwing random errors at me. You should be able to download the remover from this page. If not, get it directly from McAffee or Softpedia.

Norton: Norton Removal Tool
Back when I first used SymNRT (the old name for this app), it did a pretty good job of cleaning things up. I’ll warn you in advance: Norton Removal Tool will probably miss some files, folders, and registry keys. Still, it will at least get the program out of your way. It’s availble through this Symantec article, or directly from the Symantec FTP or MajorGeeks. [download] and run a quick registry sweep to tidy up.

Kaspersky: KAVremover
If you know in advance to search for “kavremover,” it’s fairly easy to find on the Kaspersky web site. If not, it takes a little digging. This knowledge base article contains the download for the tool and step-by-step instructions.

Avast: ASWclear
I’m a fan of Avast, and recommend it all the time, but it still has trouble removing itself every now and then. Good guys that they are, they’ve got a nice, clear link to the uninstaller on their downloads -> programs page.

Avira: Registry Cleanup
While it won’t help if the uninstaller won’t run, Avira does at least provide a tool to get rid of leftovers in your registry. It’s difficult to find on their site, so download it directly.

You know how when you uninstall Windows software you always wind up with a few leftover files and entries in the windows registry? You could skip the Control Panel and use a program like CCleaner to remove programs and then perform periodic registry scans.
