Problem on Window XP SP3

Microsoft launched the new Windows XP SP3 in windows update, many users start to reporting that their network cards and previously crafted connections had mysteriously vanished from Windows after updating with the service pack. Besides that, the device managers window show empty screen and suspect is Windows’ registry, a directory that stores settings and other critical information, had been packed with large numbers of bogus entries.

Most users who posted messages on Microsoft’s XP SP3 support forum said that the errant registry keys — which started with characters such as “$%&” and appeared corrupted at first glance which is the section devoted to Sysmantec products. So some users will blame on the security company. After that, Symantec engineers had connected the current problem to a Microsoft file named “fixccs.exe.” According to information on the Web, fixccs.exe stands for “Fix CCS MaxSubkeyName mismatch,” and appears to be part of both XP SP3’s and SP2’s update packages that happen few years ago in two Microsoft Support Documents -  KB893249 and KB914450

“After you install Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) on a Windows XP-based computer, the Device Manager window is blank or some devices no longer appear,” reads KB893249.

Fixccs.exe has also been linked to problems some users had installing early builds of XP SP3 late last year. In a support forum thread that started Dec. 22, 2007, Shashank Bansal, a Microsoft engineer helping users troubleshoot XP SP3 installation bugs, said: “This is a serious problem for us and we would like to investigate it to further depths. We would need help from all users on this forum for the same.” Bansal then asked users who had had trouble updating from XP SP2 to SP3 to identify the process that had hung or had hogged CPU cycles. “Look out for cscipt.exe or fixccs.exe,” he asked.

When asked earlier Thursday whether it had uncovered any more information about the disappearing Device Manager and the corrupted registry entries, Microsoft said it nothing new to add beyond the recommendation it made Tuesday: that users contact the company’s technical support desk if they have had problems upgrading to XP SP3.

Microsoft was not available for comment Thursday night.

XP SP3 Not yet Available to public

Microsoft has decided not to release Windows XP Service pack(SP) 3 to Windows update and Microsoft Download Center as planned on April 29. The reason? A last-minute compatibility issue with a Microsoft application — Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS).

Here’s the latest from a company spokesperson:

“I wanted to update you on today’s planned release to web (RTW) (of XP SP3). In the last few days, we have uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).

“In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center.

“To help protect our customers, we plan to put filtering in place shortly to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Once filtering is in place, we expect to release Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Download Center.

“Until we have published a fix for this issue, we advise Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers to not install either service pack. Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers running Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 should contact Microsoft Customer Support Services for additional information.

“The fix is currently in testing and will be available as soon as that process is complete.”

Website that publish out the link direct download from Microsoft to let their users download the SP3 update. spokeswoman said the company is advising users against doing this. The official response:

“Customers should not download Microsoft software from links posted on non-Microsoft websites, when those links point directly to the executable as is the case here. Customers should always download from a page on Microsoft.com that provides all relevant download details, installation instructions, and release notes. In this particular case, it’s possible that some 3rd party websites are linking to the Windows XP SP3 software that we have published for MSDN and TechNet subscribers. Since we cannot confirm the source of every link that 3rd parties provide, out recommendation is that customers wait until we’ve published Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and the Download Center.”

Besides that, Microsoft temporarily galting the Automatic Download of Windows Vista SP1 as it is affected too. But Microsoft will not taken out Windows Vista SP1 update from Microsoft Download Center and Windows Update.

“Microsoft is temporarily holding any additional automatic distribution of Windows Vista SP1. However, they continue to offer Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update for interactive installation. While we are recommending that customers running Microsoft Dynamics RMS should not install SP1, there are many other customers who can benefit from installing Windows Vista SP1 immediately, so we are maintaining availability via WU.”

Microsoft Windows XP SP3 RC2

Microsoft has released Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 to the general public. For the last few weeks the latest pre-release version of SP3 was only available to about 15,000 beta testers. But now you can download the update from Microsoft’s servers using Windows Update.

You’ll need to run a script that will add a key to your Windows registry allowing you to download SP3 RC2. This is still pre-release software, so Microsoft isn’t going to be pushing it on all Windows XP users just yet.

Microsoft has also posted the release notes for RC2, so you can read the long and mostly boring list of changes. There are a few new features under the hood, like "better black hole router detection," and "more descriptive text to explain the settings," but for the most part there’s nothing to write home about. If you like to have the latest and greatest installed on your system at all times, you might want to check out XP SP3 RC2. If you’d rather have a stable system running software that’s been well tested over the last few years, you might want to hold off for a while.
